The wife of OceanGate’s top boss was pretty confused when she heard a loud bang while the Titan submersible was going down. Wendy Rush, the wife of Stockton Rush, didn’t realize that the bang she heard was the moment the Titan imploded. The US Coast Guard just released some new footage showing Wendy Rush trying to reach out to the folks on board the doomed vessel as it was descending to see the Titanic wreck.
The tragic incident happened in June 2023, taking the lives of all five people on board, including Mr. Rush, Hamish Harding, Paul-Henri Nargeolet, Shahzada Dawood, and his son Suleman. In the video from the USCG, Wendy Rush and her colleague Gary Foss are shown keeping an eye on the Titan’s journey in the North Atlantic Ocean from the support vessel Polar Prince. After the implosion sound, Wendy Rush asks, “What was that bang?” The USCG suspects that the noise was the Titan’s implosion reaching the ocean’s surface.
Following the incident, concerns were raised about the Titan’s design and Mr. Rush’s decision not to undergo independent safety checks. The coastguard panel investigating the case listened to two weeks of testimony last September, where a former OceanGate scientific director mentioned that the Titan had malfunctioned during a dive just a few days before it imploded. OceanGate decided to halt all exploration and commercial operations in July 2023. The final report from the USCG Marine Board of Investigation will be available once the probe is complete.
