The Welsh government has decided to withdraw the controversial tree planting targets for farmers in Wales. The initial requirement for farmers to allocate 10% of their land for tree cover in return for government support has been eliminated following deliberations with farming unions.
While the tree planting targets have been removed, farmers are still expected to maintain at least 10% of their farmland as natural habitat. Additionally, temporary habitat alternatives will be explored. These targets were part of the Sustainable Farming Scheme (SFS) and had previously sparked protests by farmers outside the Senedd, with thousands of wellies being placed on the parliament steps in opposition to the Welsh government’s proposals.
Amid concerns raised within the farming sector regarding potential job losses and financial strains on farms, the scheme was postponed in May for further consultations with unions. Under the revised plans, farmers will have the discretion to increase tree or hedge coverage on their land and will receive financial incentives for doing so. Certain requirements, such as farm wash stations, have now become optional.
Deputy First Minister Huw Irranca-Davies revealed the U-turn on the policy at the Royal Welsh Winter Fair in Builth Wells, emphasizing the government’s commitment to engaging with stakeholders and addressing their concerns. He highlighted the integral role of farmers in Welsh communities, the economy, and food production, as well as their responsibility in preserving nature, combating climate change, and promoting sustainability.
The revised scheme is anticipated to be unveiled next summer with further input from stakeholders. NFU Cymru president Aled Jones welcomed the decision as a positive development but stressed the need for continued efforts to refine various aspects of the scheme. Similarly, Farmers’ Union of Wales (FUW) president Ian Rickman acknowledged the progress made but emphasized that there is still significant work ahead to ensure that farmers are adequately supported under the revised scheme.
