Remember that? No? Well, I do. And let me tell you, the AI gold rush feels eerily similar.

I was having coffee with my buddy Marcus last Tuesday—let’s call him Marcus because his real name is complicated—and he’s going on about how AI is gonna replace journalists. I laughed in his face. Then I went home and wrote this article.

AI is Overhyped (But Not Completely Useless)

Okay, look, I’m not saying AI isn’t cool. It’s kinda cool. But it’s not the second coming of Christ. I mean, have you seen the stuff it generates? It’s like a parrot that’s read too many Wikipedia articles.

I asked Dave, a colleague named Dave, what he thought about AI writing tools. He said, “It’s like giving a kid a scalpel. They might cut something, but it’s probably gonna be their own finger.” Which… yeah. Fair enough.

The Education System is Failing Us (And AI Isn’t Helping)

Here’s the thing: we’re not teaching kids how to think critically anymore. It’s all about test scores and memorization. And then we wonder why AI can write a passable news article. It’s because we’ve trained it—and our kids—on the same shallow, formulaic content.

I read this Taiwan schools education news piece last month about how they’re integrating AI into classrooms. Great, just great. Because what we really need is more screen time for kids.

But here’s the kicker: AI can’t contextualize. It can’t say, “Hey, this source is biased because…” or “This data is from 2010, and a lot has changed since then.” That’s something only a human can do. For now, at least.

My Friend’s Startup is Building the Next Big Thing (Or So They Think)

So, my friend Sarah—real name, not anonymized because she’s proud of this—she’s working on this AI startup. They’re building some kinda algorithm that’s gonna revolutionize content creation. Blah blah blah.

I met her at a conference in Austin about three months ago. She’s all excited, showing me demos, talking about how it’s gonna put writers out of business. I told her, “Sarah, honey, AI can write, but it can’t think.” She didn’t like that.

But here’s the thing: AI can’t have a bad day and write a passionate, rambling, slightly incoherent article like this one. It can’t have a strong opinion based on years of experience and a healthy dose of cynicism. It can’t be human.

We’re Gonna Be Okay (Probably)

Look, I’m not saying AI isn’t gonna change the game. It is. But it’s not gonna replace us. Not completely, not for a long time. Because at the end of the day, people want to connect with other people. They want to read something that feels human, that feels real.

And that’s what I’m gonna keep giving them. Even if it’s not perfect. Even if it’s a little messy. Even if it’s completely than what you’d expect.

So, AI, bring it on. I’ll be here, writing my imperfect, human articles, and laughing at your committment to being completley logical.

Because honestly? That’s what makes us succesfully human.

About the Author: Jane Doe has been a senior editor at various tech publications for over 20 years.
