Metal Detectorists Unearth Rare Roman-era Coin Hoard in Netherlands
In a thrilling discovery, two metal detectorists in the Netherlands stumbled upon a treasure trove of over 400 gold and silver coins dating back to the first century A.D. The remarkable collection includes a unique blend of Roman and British currency adorned with portraits of emperors and kings from Rome, England, and Africa.
The coins were unearthed in the town of Bunnik, situated approximately 24 miles southeast of Amsterdam, during the autumn of 2023. The National Museum of Antiquities of the Netherlands wasted no time in acquiring the hoard, now showcased in the captivating exhibition “The Netherlands in Roman Times.”
A Closer Look at the Unearthed Treasures
Among the 404 coins, a staggering 116 were crafted from gold, showcasing the opulence of the era. These included 72 Roman aurei minted between 19 B.C. and A.D. 47, alongside 44 gold alloy coins known as staters originating from Britain. Notably, the staters bore the name of the Celtic king Cunobeline, a prominent figure ruling from A.D. 9 to 42.

The silver coins, numbering 288 in total, spanned a wide timeline from 200 B.C. to A.D. 47. Among them, a rare depiction of Julius Caesar and a coin featuring Juba, the king of Numidia in present-day Algeria, added further intrigue to the hoard. Archaeologists speculate that the cache was concealed around A.D. 47, possibly by a Roman soldier returning from Britain who collected the coins as payment and war spoils.

This remarkable discovery marks the largest Roman-era coin hoard ever unearthed in the Dutch province of Utrecht. Furthermore, it stands as the primary example on the European mainland showcasing a mix of Romano-British currency.
