The Sturgeon Blue Supermoon 2024: online observation (19 Aug. 2024) – YouTube
The Supermoon Blue Moon rises today, offering a stunning celestial display for skywatchers around the world. You can witness this rare event live from Central Italy through a free livestream provided by astronomer Gianluca Masi of the Virtual Telescope Project. The livestream will start at 3:30 p.m. EDT (1930 GMT), and you can tune in on Space.com or directly on the Virtual Telescope Project’s WebTV page or YouTube channel, weather permitting.
What to Expect
“The show of the full moon (and of course of the ‘Supermoon’) offers its best when our satellite rises or sets, which happens at sunset and at dawn, respectively,” Masi explained on the Virtual Telescope Project’s event page. Supermoons occur when the moon is within 90% of its closest approach to Earth, making it appear about 30% brighter and 14% larger than usual. While this difference may be subtle to the unaided eye, the beauty of the Supermoon is undeniable.
August’s Supermoon Blue Moon will officially be full at 2:26 p.m. EDT (1826 GMT), but the exact rise times may vary depending on your location. This month’s supermoon is the first of four consecutive supermoons this year, with the closest one expected on October 17.
Understanding Blue Moons
The term “Blue Moon” can be a bit confusing, as it has two different meanings, neither of which relates to the color blue. The first definition refers to a seasonal Blue Moon, which occurs when there are four full moons in a season, with the third one being labeled as the Blue Moon. This is the type of Blue Moon we will witness on August 19. The second definition, often misunderstood, refers to the occurrence of two full moons in a single calendar month.
“The Supermoon offers us a great opportunity to look up and discover the sky, showcasing its stunning beauty and inspiring a deeper appreciation for the cosmos,” Masi highlighted. If you capture a breathtaking photo or video of the Supermoon Blue Moon, you can share it with Space.com by sending your images, videos, comments, and location details to spacephotos@space.com for a chance to be featured in a story.
