The Ministry of Defence has announced plans to transform an army barracks in Pembrokeshire into a deep space radar programme, which will be known as Deep Space Advanced Radar Capability (DARC). This initiative aims to detect, track, and identify objects in deep space up to 36,000km away from Earth using ground-based radars located in Australia, the UK, and the US.

The redevelopment of Cawdor Barracks in Brawdy, near St Davids, will not only create long-term jobs but also enhance the nation’s defence capabilities. The site, which has previously served as a Royal Air Force station and a Royal Navy base, is currently home to the 14th Signal Regiment, the army’s electric warfare unit.

The Defence Secretary, John Healey, emphasized that this new radar programme will not only improve the understanding of deep space but also safeguard space assets in collaboration with international partners. Wales Secretary Jo Stevens expressed support for the project, highlighting its significance for the country and the commitment of the UK government to work closely with the community for its success.

To engage with the local community, two events are scheduled to take place in September, followed by a statutory consultation period. Representatives of the programme will be present to address questions and gather feedback from residents. Additionally, an environmental impact assessment is underway to support a planning application to Pembrokeshire County Council.

The proposed redevelopment of Cawdor Barracks will involve up to 100 personnel operating the radar capability, ensuring the continuity of the site. The government’s focus on enhancing defence capabilities and creating job opportunities underscores the strategic importance of this initiative.
