Robert Tymofichuk, a teacher at New Myrnam School in Alberta, Canada, fulfilled his childhood dream after 1,800 hours of hard work by building a fully functional hovercraft. The journey began with a chance encounter on the banks of Lac Bellevue, where Tymofichuk sought permission from two women to test his creation. With his wife, Shelley, by his side, he started the engine, which he salvaged from a 1985 Toyota Celica, and took the hovercraft for a spin on the lake.

Hovercrafts, despite their futuristic name, are not flying cars but vehicles that ride on a cushion of air instead of water. They are known for their ability to travel over various terrains, making them popular for military and commercial use. Tymofichuk’s fascination with hovercraft began in his childhood, leading him to build his first one in 1986 and a second one in 2022 using repurposed components and custom-made parts.

Tymofichuk’s dedication to building hovercrafts is not unique, as he follows in the footsteps of other amateur scientists who share a similar passion. Thanks to the internet, he was able to source specialty parts and find valuable tutorials for his projects. His hovercraft can reach speeds of up to 38 miles per hour on water and nearly 50 miles per hour on ice, making it suitable for leisurely trips and exploration in hard-to-reach areas.

Beyond his personal projects, Tymofichuk shares his passion for tinkering with students through STEM projects at school. He aims to inspire the next generation of innovators by showing them that with determination and willpower, they too can achieve their dreams. His commitment to education and hands-on learning earned him the Prime Minister’s Award for Teaching Excellence in 2022.

In addition to his teaching responsibilities, Tymofichuk also volunteers for search-and-rescue missions during the summer, assisting with wildfire relief efforts in Alberta. His dedication to both education and community service reflects his belief in the power of passion and hard work to make a difference in the world. Through his example, he encourages others to pursue their interests and follow their dreams, no matter how unconventional they may seem.
