Ancient Coin Hoard from Jewish Kings Dynasty Unearthed in Jordan Valley
A remarkable discovery has unfolded in the Jordan Valley as archaeologists unearthed a 2,100-year-old hoard of 160 coins, shedding light on a pivotal era in history. The University of Haifa reported that the coins, adorned with eight-pointed stars and inscriptions in both Aramaic and Greek, bear the name of Alexander Jannaeus and were minted during the 25th year of his reign. This particular coin type, minted around 80 or 79 B.C., is described by Shay Bar, the leading archaeologist on the project, as a common variety. However, the discovery of a significant hoard of Hasmonean coins in the region is deemed highly unusual, making this find a rare and invaluable one.

The hoard was found near a collapsed wall in the food preparation area of a building at the archaeological site of Rujm es-Sia, a crucial way station for travelers en route to the nearby Hasmonean fortress of Sartaba.
