A telecoms worker, Risto Bergman, who hails from Finland, was found guilty of creating AI-generated images of child sex abuse. He utilized a legit artificial intelligence app to produce indecent pictures of young girls undergoing abuse. Scotland’s Crown Office and Procurator Fiscal Service (COPFS) highlighted that the images appeared so realistic that they could easily be mistaken for genuine photographs. Bergman reportedly utilized sexually explicit search terms while operating the app, leading the AI to generate distressing images by referencing a digital library of hundreds of real child abuse pictures shared online by pedophiles.
The disturbing images were discovered on a computer storage unit located in Bergman’s Paisley flat, with some categorized as category A – portraying the most extreme form of child sex abuse. Despite relocating from Renfrewshire to Argyll and Bute, Bergman returned to Paisley Sheriff Court and admitted to making indecent photographs or pseudo-photographs of children. As a consequence, he was given an 18-month Community Payback Order (CPO) and added to the sex offenders’ register. David Bernard, procurator fiscal for north Strathclyde, condemned Bergman’s actions, emphasizing that his creation of illegal material not only exploited children but also perpetuated abuse by encouraging offenders to continue their harmful activities.
